Who we are

Golden Psychology is a Queer-owned and operated therapy practice that specializes in LGBTQ2IA+ affirming care, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma therapy, and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). Our clinicians and staff come from a diverse set of backgrounds, and all identify as members of the LGBTQ2IA+ community.

Whom we serve

Most of our clients are part of the LGBTQ2IA+ community and many are also gender expansive. Our clients have a range of experiences and backgrounds, socioeconomic status, culture, and identities.

Through our programming and research, we intend to be a resource for the greater LGBTQ2IA+ community. We collaborate with community organizations and organizers to improve care for gender and sexuality-expansive individuals.

Our Vision

We envision a world that affirms an individual's whole self, including their gender and sexual orientation, and that validates and supports the humanity of all people.

Our Mission

We live in a world where systems of oppression are directly and indirectly created to harm and threaten the existence of LGBTQ2IA+, gender and sexuality-expansive people. In our work we aim to challenge and disrupt these processes that maintain inequity. We are aware of the harms caused by the judicial and psychiatric systems in the United States, and seek to do what we can to disrupt those harms in our provision of care. We are supportive of our employees and aim to educate, affirm, and nurture them in their efforts to continue our mission into the future.

We aim to challenge systems of oppression by:

  • Providing uniquely tailored, excellent, affirming DBT, Trauma, and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy for all individuals.

  • Training, supporting, and supervising clinicians to continue the work we’ve started, add their own perspectives, and build upon our foundations.

  • Critically and holistically engaging with the carceral system to support access to affirming care and provide much-needed support surrounding gender and sexual health. We do this through trainings for staff and the design and provision of groups to people in custody.

  • Partnering and collaborating with community organizers and organizations to support gender and sexuality-affirming care.

 Our Values

  • EMBODIMENT- We acknowledge and value our clients’ whole self. We seek to create a space that invites our clients, and our staff, to feel safe in embodying their whole self. We value all people’s humanity and experiences.

  • COMPASSION- We are committed to compassionate care. We strive to build environments with our clients that encourage them to center their truth and vulnerability. As clinicians, we are committed to partnering with our clients in holding and processing their traumas and experiences in a way that lessens the trauma burden they have to carry.

  • ACCEPTANCE and CHANGE- We believe in a balance between acceptance and change. We are a DBT practice that is centered on supporting our clients in gaining mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance skills. We strive to support our clients in building a life worth living.

  • JUSTICE- We are a restorative justice-oriented practice. We acknowledge that most traumas are a direct result from institutional systems that were not created to meet the needs of all people. In an effort to navigate and combat these systems, we consult with institutions and communities to make excellent gender-affirming care more accessible.

  • COMMUNITY- Our practice is built on openness and collaboration. We believe that we are stronger together. To acknowledge this truth, our staff embody a level of humility that welcomes teamwork and honest feedback. Our practitioners believe our clients as the expert of their lives, and consult with them to ensure that their care is specially tailored to their needs. To support this individualized client care, our clinicians also regularly partner with each other, as well as relevant institutions and communities, to share information and problem solve so that our clients are receiving the best care possible.

 Our work so far

  • Carceral justice – We have developed and implemented a monthly support group for LGBTQ+ incarcerated individuals at New York City’s Rikers Island. We provide consultation for jails and prisons as well as reentry organizations. We provide expert witness services for LGBTQ2IA+ individuals who are involved with the justice systems.

  • Consultation and training with hospitals – We work with healthcare facilities and leaders to develop and lead trainings for staff on gender and sexuality-aware and humble practices.

  • Gender affirming psychedelic assisted therapy consulting and speakership –  As a Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) practice, we are well-positioned to describe the many-faceted intersections of the growing world of psychedelic medicine and LGBTQ2IA+ mental health care. We are leaders in the growing psychedelic therapy space as it pertains to LGBTQ2IA+ individuals.

  • Innovation in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy – We are developing new modalities of group therapy for parents of gender-diverse individuals, and paving new ground in the utility of KAP to assist our patients in addressing issues of core shame, healing from trauma, and increasing DBT effectiveness. We developing a Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy intervention for gender-expansive individuals and a retreat for parents of gender expansive youth.

  • GSLAC – We developed and run the Gender and Sexuality Learning and Consultation speaker series, an innovative and necessary program that gives gender and sexuality-affirming providers opportunities for learning and consultation from experts in the field.
